Just stop! Have some damn empathy!

It’s also highlighting the worst in people. Mockery over choices made, blame for actions taken, and the spreading of false or misleading information. All opinions laid down with little basis of fact.

We have this beautiful supercomputer between our ears. Most (all? I’m no biologist) living things have them. For humans, they’re structurally the same, but each brain creates its own reality for that person to live in. That’s right, each human lives in a parallel universe. We each have our own perception of the world created by our experiences.

I am fortunate (or unfortunate) that my experiences living in third world countries have given me the basis for understanding the actions taken all around us. I am fortunate (or unfortunate) to have experienced life-altering disabilities that literally reshape your reality and actions.

These experiences mean that my brain doesn’t argue when the Players golf tournament gets canceled after day one. I know what it takes to contain the spread of contagious diseases. So when I hear golfers talking about how the travel ban can unfairly disadvantage EU players, I think to myself “seriously, you’re going to prioritize a game over trying to nip this thing in the bud”.

Also me: “my opinion, while important to me, only exists in my perception of the world.”

It doesn’t matter what side of the argument you’re on. It doesn’t matter if it’s COVID-19 or the next elections:

Maybe you’ll end exposing yourself to new experiences, maybe you’ll deepen relationships, and maybe…just maybe we can get back to a place where we could respect each other and use our differences to take ideas to new heights.

Thanks for reading.
