Start by doing mistakes

You will learn more by doing mistakes than not doing anything.

In the previous article I wrote, I promised that I would put out some tools that gives you a helping hand when trying to start growing their digital journey. First of all I want to start by saying that promising something when you don’t have a clear plan of execution (which I don’t have at the moment), is a mistake. Lesson learned.

Let me explain why that was a mistake. For me, it took a long time to gather the courage to write my first article. It might seem small to you, but to me, it was a big deal. I also suspect that will be the deal for many of you getting started out there. So let’s think about it for a second…

If you’re going to be serious about this, about writing content, posting images, about transforming your personal brand and about trying to grow your digital presence, you need content, right?

If you spend time trying to find the perfect tools, analysing and over-thinking, there is a high risk that you get stuck trying to find the perfect tools. I personally ended up in a strange limbo where I do want to continue to write but realising I’m not yet ready to share a full article about tools that will help other people to start. And that’s the issue! I put up a goal, rather than a direction. And the part between writing the next article and having it published was a blurry idea at best. I can’t make it harder for myself than it already is to get this done. Hopefully, in the future, I will have a better plan on how to form my content and I can start planning different series, different aspect of what value I can provide. But right now it’s about learning. Learning to write, learning to do instead of thinking about doing and learning to put myself out there.

For me, just as for you, in the beginning, it’s about throwing yourself out there. If you want to start your journey, you have to have the content which your journey will revolve around. For me, a big part of that content is the journey I’m currently on, in itself (so damn meta). I work in tech and I love photography, video, design and editing. In the future I’m hoping to do articles and series about all of that stuff. But this time I’m not making any promises. I’m still finding my voice. If you have a clear plan of what you want to put out, great! Then write down what you’re writing about in each article and write the first one.

Say you have an idea for a podcast. One of your closest friend travels around the world and tells you the most amazing stories. You want to share his or hers story. One way to approach this is to start thinking about the setup you want to have. You start looking into what mic to get. Then you need to hire someone to create some graphical assets for the podcast. Oh, and while you’re at it, you might start to thinking about recording the shit so we can put it up as well, because why not? Then you need to investigate good lights for recording, because you don’t want to have poor video quality in your video. And suddenly you have a million things to think about and it weighs you down. That is a worthless way to get started. Because you don’t get started. I know because I spent years doing this exact thing. If you want to get a podcast with your friend there are only two things you need to do.

Done! That’s it! Honestly! You can figure out the rest as you go along. What you can’t do is gain traction if you don’t have anything to reel people in with.

That doesn’t sound like a great offer, does it?

Start creating and figure out the details later. Trust me on this one. Now I’m in a situation where I keep thinking “Where would I be if I kept posting stuff on Instagram back when I first started my account back in 2012?” 2012! That’s eight years I could’ve used to grow! Don’t repeat my mistake. I wanted my content to be better than the next person so I ended up with no content. If you’re still not convinced, try to think of it like this… What if you do all the stuff you thought about? What if you buy a new camera, mic and a complete set of lights that gives you a great image. You spend weeks coming up with a perfect script for your podcast, the best questions available. Then you air your episode and… nothing. A single like from your mom. Oh boy, are you in for a long fall down then.

Peace out!
