Backend development in the eyes of a hopeful Film Producer

Before my bootcamp journey into the world of software development I tried to learn a little bit on my own. Everyone everywhere would say that Python is the best language to learn when you begin your coding journey because they syntax is easy to learn and easy to read. Makes sense, right? It wasn’t until I entered my bootcamp and started to really understand what learning programming languages entailed and the difference between frontend and backend that I realized something. My dream to become a film producer and my desire to become a software engineer conflict in an interesting way.

I went into college not knowing what I wanted to get out of the experience. Undeclared major and undeclared minor. A pretty typical freshman if you ask me. It wasn’t until my Sophmore year that my mom suggested I take a film class since her and I both have a love for cinema. After that first class I knew that I wanted to make movies and tell stories in ways that will actually affect people. The more I studied film the more I was able to pinpoint what I actually wanted to do in it. I knew that I couldn’t act and I hate being in front of cameras (I’m not one for the spotlight). I don’t consider myself a talented artist when it comes to crafts so anything art department or designer related was out. I hate having to explain my decisions or try to convince people why something should be done this way so director felt like a no-go to me as well. When we finally had a film producer come to our class and talk to us about the business I knew that this was the role for me. I want to be in the background, only known to people who have to know me but having a hand in every aspect of the film. A role where not only can I say that I helped in this film, but this is my film.

After thinking about it I realized that it isn’t far off to think of backend development as being a film producer. It’s the stuff that happens behind the scene, the things that the user(audience) can’t see but makes the app(film) actually work.

The same way that an app’s frontend will not work without our backend, a films’ look and feel is dependent on how it is produced. Actors can’t read lines if they don’t have a script; sets can’t be made if they don’t have a designer; scenes can’t be lit if they don’t have cinematographers and a lighting department.
