Project 4

Proposal

Solution: App

Domain: 18 year-olds registering to vote

Medium: Laptop

Because there is a wide set of readily available data and statistics about voters, I figured that designing an app in the form of a game, which is a solution that would reach a majority of the target audience as a fun, interactive way to tackle pain points when it comes to registering to vote, would be the best way to go.

I have yet to design what the app will look like, but I do want an interactive platform for younger citizens to be able to educate themselves on political issues that matter to them. I believe that to draw younger audiences to politics, games that simulate actual political situations could allow audiences to draw similarities to what they have at stake in US politics.

April 5, 2018

We began the initial stages of the designs of our final project with a competitive analysis of already existing products that target our domain. I edited my target audience to include 15–22 year-old’s to include the entire spectrum of high school students and college students as well.

I found three games on the mobile app market that attract the attention of 15–22 year-old’s: Fortnite, Bowmasters, and Peak — Brain Training. I analyzed the popularity of these three games and broke it down to these main components: competition, sociability with friends, and variety.

From this, we began to come up with our first sketches of our product. I wanted to create a Pokemon style game where the player controls a politician and battles other politicians, including friends. I settled on the app name “Pocketicians” and wanted to come up with an attractive app logo that also included some part of the app name, so I decided to use the American flag because of its political association and its resemblance to the letter ‘P’. But I’ve yet to find a final logo for my game.

For the data visualization portion of my project, I want to have an option available at the top for the players to view the leader board, which ranks players based on their level. There are five different rankings for the players to achieve, starting with the title of ‘State Senator’ and culminating with the top rank of ‘President’. From the ranks, each player will be ranked accordingly by their level, and from their number of battle wins afterwards.

Data Visualization (Leader board)

This is the profile page for the player’s character, where I’ll include some data visualizations of the player’s progress relative to other players in the region/state/country and their progress until the next level/rank. I’ll also include the option to change the character’s moveset, which will be determined by the number of ‘policies’ they own, each one having a different effect.
