Shooting Your Shot is Always a Win

Shooting your shot is always a win. This is one of my newer energies and philosophies. It doesn’t matter if it is romantically, professionally, or otherwise. It is always the right thing to do.

Before I dive into why this is the case, I want to quickly talk about rejection. A lot of people, even myself at times, have a fear of rejection. No one likes being told or feeling like they aren’t good enough. That anxiety before you shoot your shot is arguably one of the worst feelings ever. It’s an insane combination of adrenaline and nervousness unlike any other. That’s why what I’m about to tell you will change your perspective on rejection entirely.

There are two core reasons why shooting your shot is always a win.

The first is if you get the result you’re aiming for upon shooting. Whether it’s getting the date you wanted, the job offer, or the podcast guest. Scoring a win, getting that yes, is a high that will make you feel like you’re walking on water for the rest of the day. It is close to being the best feeling in the world. Even getting the opportunity to experience that feeling is worth it to shoot. Sure the lows are low, but my god the highs are SO much higher.

The second reason to why you should always shoot your shot is admittedly harder to get to mentally. However, it was also the revelation that inspired this piece. You should always shoot your shot because it gets you closer to what you want no matter what. Let me explain

The two things I am the most confident in are that I will be hyper successful and that I’m going to marry someone who is the total package. Look, I don’t make the rules.

Naturally, that leads me to shoot for the damn stars, especially with women. Now, I’m not throwing up shots left and right with Instagram models or anything of that sort. However, I lucked into a potential opportunity with someone lightyears out of my current league. Like, I HAD TO shoot from half court.

Unfortunately, I missed. It happens. It was expected. But somewhere in that rejection it hit me that every shot is a win even on a miss. Hell, even beforehand it was almost as if I knew what I was doing.

The second reason why it is always a win is because it gets you one step closer to your next made shot. Think of it this way, you have a bag of skittles with two of every color but only one red and your goal is to pull the red one. However, once you pull out the wrong skittle from the bag it remains outside of the bag because you know it’s the wrong color. This parallels getting rejected because once you get rejected it’s most likely definitive. So with the numbers of skittles in that bag getting smaller and smaller soon enough you’re going to pull the right color.

I can already hear the rebuttals “but Mettleist each shot is independent and has no relation on the next or previous!”

Oh this is absolutely true, and I appreciate your logical thinking. But when you have the sheer confidence that “you’re due” for a win that logic goes out the window. It’s like in basketball. You ever watch Steph Curry start a game 0–5 then he makes his next 7 shots? The mindset behind that is “it only takes one to go in. Keep shooting” which is exactly where I’m getting at here, too.

These two reasons are why shooting your shot is always a good thing. The first being because of hitting the desired outcome and the second being you’re one step closer to getting what you want regardless of the response. There’s a third reason, but I want to save that for another video because it ties into a larger way of thinking. So hit that subscribe button if you want to see that coming soon.
