Who or What is a Citizen?

It seemed like I was not the only one, as I scrolled through the comments of these new articles and found a lot of anger and sacrastic remarks from other readers. In light of the recent political climate in the United States and the refugee crises overseas, this makes a lot of sense. Since he’s taken office in 2017, Donald Trump has unveiled a travel ban from various countries like Libya, Somalia, Syria, etc. and has also announced the phase out of President Obama’s “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA), which allows undocumented young adults to work in America without fear of deportation. With these new actions, it is even more difficult now for immigrants to gain status as an American citizen.

Think about it. People are treated differently not because of their behaviors, their potential, or their morals, but because they do not have the correct papers. From a logical standpoint, this makes no sense. If we want to live in a productive and safe environment, we need to stop judging people based on their papers or ethnicity and start judging them on their actions. If an individual has no criminal history and is contributing to a society, they should be allowed to live comfortably in that society. In addition this, if they have not yet contributed to society, they should be allowed the opportunity to do so. Immigrants are humans and their rights are human rights. If a robot can be granted status as a citizen, than granting that same status to another person should not be this difficult or this much of an issue.
