My Obama Introduction Speech

Ladies and Gentlemen, YSEALI fellows, friends, distinguished guests:

I am honored and excited to be here today.

I grew up in an ordinary family in Saigon. But my dad rarely said no to my dreams, including my dream to study abroad and discover new horizons. Like many other Vietnamese parents, he has made so many sacrifices so I can have a better future.

When I graduated from Stanford, I decided to build an education company in Vietnam. Even my friends asked. “Tu, aren’t you wasting your Stanford degree?”

Toni Morrison, one of President Obama’s favorite writers, once said: If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.

My book has been about how to develop and connect talent for the future. From a girl who used to dream, I became an entrepreneur leading Yola, an organization that has prepared over 10,000 Vietnamese students to study overseas. I also helped start ELSA, an award winning app to help people speak English with confidence.

In my journey, young people have asked me: What businesses should I build? How can I create lasting and sustainable impact? How can I ensure everyone has equal opportunity? President Obama told young people not to be impatient. Indeed, making impact is the work of a lifetime.

President Obama also said: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” From a humble community organizer to the first black president of the United States, President Obama has been an inspiration for me and many many others.

Like all of us here, I have many questions about Vietnam and the future. That’s why I’m eager to learn from President Obama today.

And now, without further ado, I’d like to introduce to the stage the President — of the United States of America — , Barack — Obama.
