My Worst Run Ever Involved Desperately Needing to Go to The Bathroom

What I learned on that day is that sometimes, adrenaline supersedes your biological needs.

It was the first day that I moved to Baltimore, in late June 2019. My lease to my apartment started on July 1st, so I stayed at a friend’s place on my first day moving in on June 24th. We agreed to wake up at 5 a.m. to go on a run, and the next day, he woke me up from his couch and then brought me on a run with him as we stumbled our tired bodies out the door. In the summers, we have to wake up early because it gets way too hot to run in the afternoon or in the evening.

It was my first day in Baltimore and my first run in Baltimore, and as you can imagine, I had no idea where I was going or what I was doing. I just followed my friend around on a run where I was barely awake and just conversing with my friend about how he was doing in medical school and how he liked living in Baltimore.

It was just a standard five-mile run, but it quickly turned into a disaster. About two miles in, I desperately needed to go to the bathroom, to the point where I needed to walk and couldn’t run anymore. Not only was it unpleasant, but it was excruciatingly uncomfortable. We looked for the nearest bathrooms, looking for hope each and every time, but to no avail.

Every time we’d reach a porta-potty, it would be locked. After all, it was about 5:30 a.m. and all of them were locked prior to 8 a.m. so I just didn’t know what to do. We would walk around for like 15 minutes trying and trying to find an open bathroom, again to no avail. About 10 different porta-potties we encountered were closed and locked, and suffice to say, I was suffering substantially.

I didn’t know what to do. We were about two and a half miles away from my friend’s apartment with no option whatsoever for me to use the bathroom, and I could put it in more crude terms of how I felt, but this is still the Internet and attached to my name, so my employer and my entire family can read this, so I have to be more judicious with my language.
