For The Greater Good

for my distant cousin, Kashmir

The idea of good, of oneness, of union. The idea of symphony.

She was shut in a room with rose pink walls. The door was locked and windows shut. A small hole in the ceiling was all there was for ants to crawl in. And they came in — in thousands. Her bed was surrounded by anthills, and little clone ants crawled up her arms. She was stuck. Her parents were in the living room amongst 100s of guests from their community. They proudly announced their daughters engagement with a boy who stood next to them. She could hear them rejoice. A concerned aunt asked- is she happy? Another said — of course, it’s for her own good. Look at him. Of course she is happy. She heard the loud celebrations that followed. I couldn’t say if she were happy or not (I am a distant relative). I am guessing yes, the boy indeed was quite the catch. Maybe she wanted to celebrate with us? None of us could know. She was locked amongst what I believe were friendly ants.

I am writing this for Kashmir, and anxiously waiting to hear her voice. Does she like this boy at all, I hear she chose him herself? I know I know it’s for her own good, of course she is willing but can we see if she okay? Knock perhaps? We are all so happy for her, I am sure, they will have a glorious life. Shall we continue?

She stood under that tiny hole, looked at the yellow sun creeping in with the ants. The space between her brows lit with peace. She meditated for days with ants stuffed in her throat.

Perhaps 370 needed to be ripped and this was the ‘only’ way to go about it. I love India too much to fathom otherwise. My tiny brain can not comprehend but somehow my heart is anxious. I think it’s my myopia acting up, again.

Do you know why was she locked in? Yes, sometimes she has fits and gets out of control. To save her from herself really. Her parents are extremely kind and concerned, they know.
